Appendix C
Switch Considerations for FICON
This appendix describes fibre channel switch considerations for Edge 3000 FICON extension.
FICON Director (Switch) Considerations
There are 3 key things to consider when working in FICON configurations with switches.
Whether or not an ISL is involved, and if so, ensuring that ISL paths are properly configured.
What the Fibre Channel bb-credits value should be.
What the Fibre Channel ports speeds should be set to.
FICON supported Switch Configurations
MCDATA Ultranet systems support the following configurations:
Point-to-Point (direct attachment; no switches). The "Point-to-Point" topology refers to
configurations where the UltraNet Edge fibre channel interfaces are directly connected to host
and device interfaces (i.e. N_Port extension).
Switched point-to-point (single switch). The "Switched Point-to-Point" topology encompasses
configurations that include a single switch (i.e. F_Port extension) on only one side of the
WA N .
Cascaded Director (Switch) ISL (two switches). The Cascaded Directors topology includes
two switches, and only two switches, with one switch on both sides of the WAN. In this case
the UltraNet systems are used to extend the ISL (i.e. E_Port extension) between the two
switches. The Cascaded Director topology is used to extend MVS host to device cascaded
configurations as well as device to device configurations such as IBM VTS and Sun VTSS
peer to peer configurations .
The Cascade Switching topology, which involves 3 or more switches, is not supported.
